Building a garden bed in the lawn

Our big project this morning was to dig in a garden plot after the usual morning routine. S had to retro fit the rototiller that was put together wrong to start it off. I pushed it to the plot area and we got started digging up the grass. With Sheldon's sore shoulders I took over the rototilling. Around and round till it was good and worked up with rocks picked while we went.

At noon it was complete for now. Time for lunch and a cold beer. S loaded up his equipment and was off to town at 1. Trash was dumped on the way by to shinny. Peas and sweet peas were soaked in water to plant soon. I headed back out to continue gardening. The sun was now behind the clouds and blustery. I planted the narcissus bulbs that I did not successfully have bloom in water near the tulips. Other perennial deadheading was done then the raised beds were mixed and raked.

Sharon stopped to feed Timba so we had a visit and I showed her the new garden plot. Once she was off, I started trimming the trees to the north of the house. The pear was the most precarious. I told Harley she may need to call 911 if I fall :). I took the supports of “Darren” tree - this is the poor evergreen that fell over a couple times. I finished up at 5, fed Harley and came in to have a drink and prep supper. S as home from town with Cooper, having met his friend Gary for beers after hockey.

Steak and mashed potatoes with a salad filled our bellies for supper. I went out at 7 to walk the dogs. This led to 2 hours of working outside. As we walked back from the gate, S was heading to the pit with the skid steer to scoop some compost. Britt arrived to feed at the same time then she and Cooper were off.

He dumped at north end of the garden and I raked it even. The next load he brought in from the south side. It was spread around then I ran the rototiller thru it all to mix in.

Next up was creating the planting rows. I left a wide end on the north for sunflowers and corn. The rows were raked into berms. S put the skid steer away and went inside to watch his Flames. I took a broken straw bale and started the covering process before it got to dark.

Time for a soak in the hot tub for me. I then had quick shower, lotion and into bed to watch YouTube gardening videos with a yogurt bowl. S went out during intermission for his hot tub and returned to watch last period with his yogurt bowl. Once he was asleep, I read for awhile.
