The day started with a howling wind — the wind was awful to wake up to — but at least we managed a rare 9 a.m. sleep-in. S brewed a pot of coffee, and I filled a to-go mug for him to take to his 10 a.m. rodeo security meeting. Meanwhile, Chuck and Deb enjoyed a slow morning with toast and coffee — easy keepers, those two. Deb showered and packed up their bags as they prepared to move on to Mom’s in Oyen.
S was back just before noon. With the fridge packed full of leftovers, lunch was a help-yourself affair — a smorgasbord of all the week’s favorites. Afterward, we pulled out the cards for a feisty round of Spite and Malice.
B arrived just before 1:30, let Roo out for some fresh air, and joined us at the table for a game Once the game wrapped up, the Schmitts said their goodbyes, planning a quick pit stop in town to stock up on Canadian goodies before making their way to Oyen.
S, B, and I played one more game before town errands—but not without a little drama. Mid-game, the card shuffler started to lag, so S swapped out the batteries. Unfortunately, one of them had leaked, and despite his quick wipe-up, the damage was done — a patch of acid ate into the finish of our dining table. UGH. It was one of those “hold your breath” moments where you just have to take a deep sigh and move on… add it to the future fix-it list.
B and I headed to town — dog food on her list for now picky Cooper, while S sank into the couch for a big nap. Back home, B got to work trimming horse hooves, S moved the bales he’d previously stacked near the gate onto the gravel areas in the yard, and I sat down to tackle the blog backlog. After finally finishing Sunday’s post, I rolled on to the next few days.
At 7, supper was another glorious round of leftovers — zero effort, all flavor. B cleaned Roo’s pen, then asked us to saddle up for a quick ride. We made one fast loop around the field as the mosquitos were thick tonight after all the recent rain. After untacking, I trimmed Switch’s back hooves (B had already handled the fronts, plus Beibs and Bird earlier), while she fixed up Roo. S watched for a bit then drove the poop wagon to the pit — with more rain in the forecast, it needed to be cleared.
I headed to the garden to pull the last of the radishes and got a bit of weeding done, though the mozzies kept me on my toes. S opted for a hot tub soak, but I passed — they’d already found me in the garden. B let the horses out to pasture, and she and Coop hit the road home just before 9:30.
We ended the evening finishing the final episodes of season one of 1923. A full, satisfying day — the kind that makes you grateful for simple pleasures and a bit of extra sleep.

Deb mentioned about the battery spill on your table. Disappointing but I know an excellent refurbisher I could recommend that with love and talent will be able to make it look as good as new. I bet your yard, like ours, is loving the moisture and attention. Stacie commented that mine looked very nice! I thoroughly enjoyed learning some new card games. Hope I can remember the next time I dig out some cards. I will have to invest in an automatic card shuffler as well.
