Sunshine, Schmitt's and Summer Heat

Great news to start the day—Schmitt’s passports finally arrived! After the unexpected delay, they can officially get on with their vacation plans. Morning coffees were had, Roo is officially off her morning meds now (we’re weaning her slowly), and Harley wasn’t too keen on her breakfast—picky pup. One more surprise: since the magpie trapping last week, they’ve almost vanished. No cat food raids, no squawking—peaceful and quiet!

The forecast called for a scorcher, hitting 31°C, so I got the soakers going on the gardens early and hand-watered the planters and square beds. S checked over the skid steer, planning to tighten a belt, but ended up needing to hunt down a part. He headed to town for errands and to pick up Cooper while I tidied up the house and basement, prepping for company.

S made it back just before 1, and soon after, the Schmitt's and their guests Allen and Dorothy arrived. It was a lovely afternoon catching up before the U.S. crew headed west around 3:30. We settled in to finish watching the Stampede. Seeing it hit 32 in Calgary, the crew headed to a water park to cool off.

Later, S zipped over to Matt’s in the ranger to check on a tractor and came back asking for a ride to pick it up around 5:30. He spent the evening prepping the baler. Meanwhile, Roo got her free time outside in the hot sun with her herd.

With S still working away, I took the dogs for a walk and grabbed a few bites of sushi for supper. Then it was back out to do more watering in the square garden beds—everything’s drying fast in this heat.

S came in to eat just as B arrived around 8. He went back out to begin rolling hay while she fed the horses and I finished up today’s blog post. I also reached out to the winner of my latest draw for new email subscribers—always fun to spread a little excitement!

Before wrapping up, I gave the custom table a light rub-down, but can you believe it? The oil finish still isn’t dry after more than a week. Our humidity has been sitting at around 50%, which must be slowing it down.
