Like clockwork I woke at 7 am again… good grief. Thankfully I managed to drift back asleep until just before 8 before letting the dogs out into blazing sunshine and — miracle of miracles — NO WIND.
We enjoyed our usual coffee in bed before S headed outside to mix up a batch of Roundup for the gravel and bark-covered areas. Last year’s weed battle nearly defeated us both, so this year I officially caved and approved chemical warfare.
After lunch and the news, S headed to town around 12:30 for a rodeo grounds work bee while I ventured outside armed for battle against weeds. It was a bugger of a job but I made good progress pulling weeds and watering in the onions and peas. The Egyptian walking onions I replanted had to fend for themselves though — there’s no nearby hose and I wasn’t hauling watering cans that far in the wind.
B popped out to feed and while I weeded, then she headed off to work around 1 leaving Cooper for another sleepover.
Tired of fighting the wind, I retreated inside for accounting work and balancing accounts just as S rolled home around 4. He brought me a new library book along with a couple parcels from the gate — including paint products from a Calgary gal taking over a paint line who wanted me to try them out.
One colour was a moss green… and honestly, not an inspiring color for me. Maybe an old hutch? Garden bench? Any suggestions?
We cracked a cold beer while I added the final ingredients to the soup and S picked the chicken from the bones. Supper was ready shortly after 5 and absolutely hit the spot.
By 6 the wind had FINALLY disappeared so I took the dogs for a walk while S stayed back icing his knee and pretending to work on the agricultural census between hockey watching sessions. Apparently hockey season and knee pain are directly connected ;)
It was such a beautiful evening to loop around checking water troughs. Jimmy of course tagged along because he is a pocket pony. Back at the house I kept right on gardening and weeding while Harley sprinted indoors the second we got home. Cooper, meanwhile, continued his self-appointed security patrol supervising me outside.
Before finally calling it quits around 7:30 I had dug up and weeded around two peonies, two sand cherries, and a plum tree. Casual evening gardening apparently.
Then it was hot tub time — solo this round while S remained faithfully planted on the couch with… you guessed it… hockey.
After a shower he did at least help change the bed sheets before I crawled into fresh bedding to finish today’s blog and start my new book The Idea of You. S then took his own solo tub between games then watched hockey long after I had already fallen asleep.

The weather certainly has made it challenging getting the yard work done.
