Uber hot 33 moving day in Medicine Hat

I woke at six with my brain racing through a to-do list, but managed to drift back off until just before eight. First order of business: coffee. I brewed ours to enjoy in bed, then it was onto—cargo trailer cleared of stored items to make room, snacks packed, and an iced coffee made for the ride. Poor Harley got breakfast but sulked when she realized she wasn’t coming along. Britt, still not feeling great, bowed out last minute, but promised to check on her later and give her some love.

We rolled out of the yard at 9:45, heading east. Along the way, we passed Candace and Reese on their way to the airport—he’s off to Japan for three months (or longer!). A pit stop in Redcliff for a quick bite, and then on to Mom and Dad K’s, where the real work began. The day was a scorcher—33 degrees with a hair-dryer wind—and of course it was moving day.

First up, the teak sideboard. Unfortunately, the dolly wheels were flat, so Sheldon zipped to a nearby station to pump them up while I went to push Papa from their apartment main door. Grama had her own armful of items in tow, and before long we were sorting, snapping photos to the girls, and carting more boxes.

Look at this beautiful Christmas card the girls made Grama and Papa

Colleen and Elton dropped by to lend a hand (and sneak in a short visit), which was followed by another big job: the jumbo curio cabinet Papa had built. With Gooch joining us at the staff door, we wheeled it through, squeezed it into the elevator, and delivered it safe and sound. Back at the house, we scooped up the last of the outdoor odds and ends, then pointed the loaded trailer toward Candace’s place.

She was back from Calgary, knee-deep in house prep for her Friday handover. But before we could unload, disaster struck: water leaked out of the trailer door. Inside, a planter had toppled—spilling water and dirt everywhere. A Christmas bin had tipped too, smashing some glass bulbs, and the marble table had gone over. Cleanup on aisle two!

Once that mess was wrangled, we set about packing her treasures—garden tools, Nathan’s share, our share, and even a lawnmower Sheldon claimed (his old repairs had finally given up). Before we finished, a lady arrived for a desk, but since she came solo, the three of us did the heavy lifting for her. By the time Candace’s things were loaded, the trailer, the truck bed, and the back seat were all packed to the brim.

We parked in the shade and headed to the apartment, where Grama made us a hot dogs, fruit, candy, and dessert supper. Candace joined us soon after we arrived, and we all lingered until 7:30 before finally starting the trek home. A Tim’s stop was mandatory—large iced coffee and my beloved pumpkin muffin (back in season!), plus an apple fritter for my prince.

weather leaving the Hat - soon to change

The wind was fierce by then, so we topped up with fuel, just in case. Sure enough, the weather turned wild—temperatures plunged from 33 down to 11 as lightning cracked across the sky and rain bucketed down in patches. We rolled into the yard a little after 10 to find 3/10ths of rain had fallen—right on the hay we were hoping to bale.

I crawled into bed reading my book until 11, while Sheldon stayed up in Big Brown with his bowl of pasta and the Internet, finally calling it a night around midnight.
