Finding Our Footing Again

What a surreal, somber morning. The past week has been such a chaotic whirlwind of emotions and events that it hardly feels real. I can only imagine how much more surreal it must feel for B.

S made coffee while I did a little Instagram scrolling before getting to work on the blog. I finished and published Sunday's post. So much has happened that I wanted to make sure I documented it all. The details I include in my blog may seem unimportant or uninteresting to many, but over the years it has become our record book. We've gone back to check vaccination dates, hoof trims, appointments, trips, and all kinds of little details. This past week, though, I wanted to capture at least some of the chaos and emotions we lived through.

A hot shower was definitely in order while S continued searching for tractor parts. It's hard to imagine how anyone isn't discouraged from farming when one repair seems to lead to another.

Harley seemed to be feeling the loss too. She didn't even stir from her bed until 12:20.

After a lunch of leftovers, I settled back at the computer and disappeared down a rabbit hole creating artistic portraits of Cooper to frame for B. S finally got rolling with baling, and thankfully everything seemed to be working properly. Since our printer refuses to print colour anymore, I sent the images to a copy shop in town, then spent even more time reworking them with a softer, more artistic feel.

Eventually I forced myself to stop. Partly because I'd spent enough hours at the computer, and partly because I discovered the very first print I'd sent them—with questions about the sizing—had actually printed just fine.

My Mother's Day chrome nails had definitely seen better days, so around 4:00 I headed into town. I picked up the prints, treated myself to a fresh set of sparkly pink nails, and grabbed a pizza for supper. There was a slight delay with the order, but I was back at the ranch by 5:30.

B was sitting with Harley when I arrived, and I was relieved to see she liked the pictures. ❤️ S had finished 64 large round bales and was in the shop hooking up the small square baler. He stopped for a quick couple slices of pizza before B and I headed out to catch the horses for a ride.

The horses were feeling pretty fresh with all the baling activity going on. Switch especially had plenty of energy, and every time we rode past the tractor someone was ready to leap into action. Harley decided to join us too. With lots of encouragement—and me telling her to channel your inner Cooper—she made it all the way around the pasture with us in the beautiful 27°C sunshine. It felt fitting somehow.

Go Harley!

Below she scotches the corner but great effort in all

After our ride, the horses enjoyed a hose-off before B fed them while I cut another bouquet of peonies.

B headed home before 8:00, leaving me at the island to write today's blog while the Stampede played in the background. Afterwards I moved over to my big computer, uploaded a mountain of photos and videos for Monday's post, and got that published too. By the time I finished, S had wrapped up baling over 325 small square bales around 9:00.

He cleaned up and settled onto the couch to watch the rodeo while I escaped to the bedroom for another episode of We Were Liars. Once the rodeo was over, S joined me and we watched another episode of Clarkson's Farm. Just as we were calling it a night, he happened to glance out the window and noticed the shop lights were still on.

Good catch.

Out he went one last time before we could finally call it a day.
