Wind, Memories, and Making It Through the Day

The howling wind woke me at 3:30, then again at 7:30. Bitter cold followed— -17 with a windchill closer to -31. A harsh start to an already heavy day.

Today marks the second anniversary of Dad’s passing, and the weight of that sat quietly in the background all day. While searching for his balaclava, S uncovered a Davey Crockett hat instead, which brought some unexpected laughter to the family text chain—a small, welcome moment of levity.

After showering, I moved into marketing work while S plugged in the skid steer so he could roll a bale later, then made his lunch. I prepped guacamole before heading out after lunch. In town, I treated myself to a free rewards chai tea, then went to my nail appointment—new colour, shorter length, and a fresh reset.

From there, I picked up Cooper and stopped at Paetz’s for a short visit with the girls and Craig before heading home. On the way to the mailbox, I came upon a vehicle rollover just past our approach. The tow truck had just arrived, and on my way back traffic was stopped in both directions while they worked to load the SUV—sobering to see in these conditions.

Back home, S was scrolling his laptop after giving Harley a bath. I vacuumed and folded laundry while S hauled the old 42" TV up from our bedroom to test whether it might work above the fridge. Heavy bugger—but we got a sense of scale, even though the wall-mount arm we have isn’t long enough.

I made prime rib for supper, with B joining us after her post-work nap. S headed out to roll a bale for the horses, then settled into hockey night. B later braved the cold to feed, then she and Cooper headed home around 9:30.

I ended the evening with a Palm Royale marathon, nearly finishing the season before sleep finally caught up with me. A long, cold, emotional day—carried through with routine, a bit of laughter, and quiet persistence.
